The 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto is Italian roadster perfection. First-year Spider 1600, designed by Battista "Pinin" Farina himself as the final project of his legendary career — and what a final project it was. That instantly recognizable "boat-tail" rear end, the elegant pointed nose, the long flowing fenders, and a silhouette so flawlessly drawn that even Alfa Romeo's later updates couldn't quite match the original's purity. Underneath the gorgeous bodywork: Alfa's beloved 1.6-liter twin-cam aluminum inline-four, five-speed manual, four-wheel disc brakes, and the kind of small-displacement, high-revving Italian driving experience that turned an entire generation of enthusiasts into Alfa lifers. Then The Graduate came out in 1967 with Dustin Hoffman wheeling a red Duetto across the screen — and the Spider became forever immortalized in cinema history. Just over 6,000 first-year boat-tail Duettos were built, making them the most coveted of all Spider variants.
