American muscle. The '71 Camaro is the second-generation Chevy at one of its most aggressive moments. The new-for-'70 body had finally settled in by '71 — that long, flowing fastback roofline, the split-bumper RS front end, the European-influenced styling that Chevrolet's designers borrowed from Ferrari and Maserati and somehow made entirely their own. The result was one of the cleanest, most beautifully proportioned American muscle cars ever drawn. Under the hood: the SS package was still on the order sheet with the 350 or the 396 big-block, and the Z/28 was still carrying the legendary high-revving LT-1 small-block — the same engine variant making the Corvette so legendary that year. Compression had started to drop with regulations tightening, but the '71 was still genuine factory muscle, still wearing the cowl-induction hood, still riding on the same chassis that made the second-gen one of the best-handling muscle cars Chevy ever built.
