The 1972 Mach 1 is the Mustang at its most aggressive looking. Final year before the big crash-bumper redesign of '73, and the Mach 1 wore that menacing SportsRoof fastback body with absolutely zero apologies — that long sloping rear deck flowing in one uninterrupted line from roof to tail, the matte-black hood with NACA scoops, hood pins, sport-mirror dual driver's side mirrors, the chin spoiler, the rear deck spoiler, and side striping that made every angle look like it was already moving. Underneath the hood: the 302 small-block was standard, but the engine to chase was the 351 Cleveland — the four-barrel Cobra Jet variant in particular, with its high-flow heads and aggressive cam producing one of the best-sounding small-blocks Ford ever built. By '72, compression had dropped, advertised horsepower was switching from gross to net, and the muscle era was clearly ending — but the Mach 1 was still factory performance with a four-speed Hurst on the floor and bodywork that genuinely looked like it could hurt somebody.
