Caffeine and gasoline. The McLaren F1 is the greatest supercar ever built — and one of the most uncompromising road cars ever produced. Designed by Gordon Murray and unveiled in 1992, the F1 redefined what was mechanically possible in a road car: a 6.1-liter naturally aspirated BMW S70/2 V12 producing 627 horsepower (built by BMW Motorsport specifically for McLaren), a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis (the first ever in a production road car), a top speed of 240.1 mph that held the production car record for over a decade, and Murray's legendary central driving position with passengers seated slightly behind on each side — a layout that has never been replicated in any other production car.
Then there's the obsessive engineering: gold-leaf-lined engine bay (gold is the most efficient thermal insulator), titanium fasteners throughout, a custom-designed Kenwood stereo, and a tool kit machined to the same standard as the car itself. Just 106 F1s were ever produced — 64 road cars, 28 race cars, and a handful of prototypes — and surviving examples now trade for $20-25 million at auction, making the F1 one of the most valuable production cars on earth. The 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans saw McLaren F1 GTRs finish 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 13th overall — humiliating purpose-built race cars in their own discipline.
