Underneath that boxy late-'80s bodywork: the absolutely legendary RB26DETT — a 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six, twin-cam, 24-valve, originally engineered specifically to dominate Group A touring car racing. Then add ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive shuffling power between the wheels in milliseconds, Super-HICAS rear-wheel steering quietly making the chassis feel half its size, and a body purpose-built to hunt down and destroy the European competition on Japanese touring car circuits. Then the R32 went out and actually did it.
The R32 GT-R won every single Japanese Touring Car Championship from 1990 to 1993 — undefeated, untouchable, completely dominant — until the rule book was literally rewritten to outlaw it from competition. Then it crossed the Pacific. The R32 GT-R was permitted to compete in the Australian Touring Car Championship for 1991-1992 — and proceeded to absolutely embarrass the local Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons that had ruled the series. Wheels Magazine in Australia, watching this Japanese sedan demolish their domestic muscle cars, finally gave up trying to find comparisons and called it Godzilla — a destroyer from Japan, devastating everything in front of it. The name stuck. Permanently. Today, clean R32 GT-Rs trade for prices that would shock buyers from a decade ago — and the legend keeps growing.
