The R32 is where Godzilla was born. After a 16-year hiatus, Nissan brought the GT-R name back in 1989 with the R32 — and immediately rewrote what was possible for a Japanese performance car. The RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six, originally engineered to dominate Group A touring car racing. ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive shuffling power on the fly. Super-HICAS rear steering. And then it went out and won every single Japanese Touring Car Championship from 1990 to 1993 — undefeated, untouchable, completely dominant — until the rule book was literally rewritten to ban it. That's where the Godzilla nickname came from. Not from marketing. From an Australian magazine watching this car destroy everything in front of it and finally giving up trying to find a comparison.
