The 2JZ-GTE is the most legendary Japanese engine ever built. Toyota walked into the early 1990s and quietly produced what would become the absolute foundation of modern JDM tuning culture — a 3.0-liter cast-iron inline-six with sequential twin turbochargers, a 24-valve dual-overhead-cam cylinder head, and a bottom end engineered with the kind of obsessive over-build that turned tuners into believers and Toyota into legends. Stock from the factory: 320 horsepower (which everyone immediately recognized as a deeply conservative rating).
Lightly modified with bolt-ons and a tune: 500 horsepower. Built right with upgraded turbos and supporting modifications: 800-1,000 horsepower on stock internals. Built fully with forged pistons and rods: 1,500+ horsepower.
