The Yamaha TZ750 is one of the most legendary, most terrifying, and most successful Grand Prix motorcycles ever built. Yamaha launched the TZ750 in 1974 as their factory weapon for Formula 750 racing and the AMA Grand National Championship — and what they delivered was absolutely brutal: a liquid-cooled, two-stroke, 700-something cc inline-four engine making over 100 horsepower at a time when production sport bikes were making 60. Light, vicious, with absolutely zero engine braking, no power below 8,000 rpm, and a powerband so narrow and explosive that riders described it as having two completely different personalities — civil one moment and unleashed the next. The TZ750 became the dominant motorcycle in 750cc Grand Prix racing throughout the mid-to-late 1970s. Steve Baker won the 1977 Formula 750 World Championship on one.
Kenny Roberts famously rode a TZ750-powered dirt-track flat tracker at the Indianapolis Mile in 1975 and won — an absolutely insane move that prompted the AMA to ban two-strokes from flat track racing afterward, calling it too dangerous. Roberts later famously said he never wanted to ride that bike again. Today, surviving TZ750s are some of the most collectible and most respected vintage Grand Prix motorcycles in existence, regularly headlining historic motorcycle racing events like Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Isle of Man Classic TT.
